These include ancestral connections suggested by family trees and DNA matches. My father&#8217;s cousin is Joyce and she matches me on her maternal side:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-06_51_43-Window.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12599\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-06_51_43-Window.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"727\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-06_51_43-Window.png 727w, http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-06_51_43-Window-300x221.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So that is the side I am most interested in right now. Then I am more interested in Joyce&#8217;s maternal grandfather James Hartley&#8217;s side as that side is less defined than the Snell side.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the ancestors of James Hartley born 1862 in Bacup, Lancashire, England:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-06_55_36-Window.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12600\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-06_55_36-Window.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"741\" height=\"518\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-06_55_36-Window.png 741w, http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-06_55_36-Window-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joyce&#8217;s Thru-Line suggestions start at her fourth great-grandparent level which is represented by the last column on the right above. However, I am not convinced of all the people that are already in that column &#8211; especially John Hartley, Anne Bracewell, Nathaniel Baldwin and Margreatt Baldwin. Part of the reason I&#8217;m not convinced of them is that I&#8217;m not totally convinced I have their children right: James Hartley and Betty Baldwin. They were just my best guesses.<\/p>\n<h2>James Hartley 1763 Thru-Lines<\/h2>\n<p>Ancestry shows the Thru-Lines for James Hartley incorrectly:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-07_00_35-Window.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12601\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-07_00_35-Window.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"572\" height=\"565\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-07_00_35-Window.png 572w, http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-07_00_35-Window-300x296.png 300w, http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-07_00_35-Window-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joyce does match Ruth by DNA but John Pilling was likely not the father of John Pilling. John&#8217;s father was Mary Pilling who later married Robert Hartley. That would make Joyce and Ruth 1\/2 3rd cousins once removed. She was born in Bradley. Here is Bradley at the orange circle below. Let&#8217;s look at the two DNA matches on the right. Let&#8217;s look to see if their genealogy matches with what I think mine could be. When I click on the child of Nathaniel Baldwin, it goes to a site that has many trees managed by Helen. The first tree has over 50,000 people in it. I&#8217;ll look at that one. Nathaniel&#8217;s wife is Margaret, so that matches with the birth record I had for my Betty Baldwin. Next, I have to look for a marriage for James Farrar. If this was the same Betty born in 1771, then she would have been 21 at the time of her wedding to James Farrar.\u00a0 How do we reconcile that marriage with this one?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-11_07_13-Window.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12610\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-11_07_13-Window.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"483\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-11_07_13-Window.png 483w, http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-11_07_13-Window-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is 9 years later, so if this was the same Betty Baldwin, she would be 30. There seems to be a few possibilities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This Betty married twice, but wouldn&#8217;t she then be a widow rather than a spinster the second time?<\/li>\n<li>These were two different Betty&#8217;s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My guess was that this could have been James and Betty living in a section of Trawden called Hole in 1841:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-11_16_03-Window.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12611\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-11_16_03-Window.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"693\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-11_16_03-Window.png 693w, http:\/\/www.jmhartley.com\/HBlog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/2019-11-19-11_16_03-Window-300x86.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 693px) 100vw, 693px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, I don&#8217;t know if this James and Betty are the parents of my Robert, or if they are another James and Betty. Dates for the 1841 were rounded up to the nearest 5 years. So if this is the same couple that got married in 1801, they would have been at the oldest 39 and 29. If this was a 70 year old Betty Baldwin in Hole in 1841, then that could fit in with her birth in 1771. However, this was an Inghamite baptism. At any rate, this Betty Hartley, if this was correct age, would have been born about 1775.<\/p>\n<p>Next, I check out Little Laithe in 1841. Instead, it could be that the connection could be on my Shackleton side. Along the way, I ruled out the birth and death of my ancestor John Shackelton as that pair of birth and death dates belonged to another John Shackelton. Through additional research, I was able to separate a different more famous Shackleton Line from mine.<\/li>\n<li>I found an additional ThruLine for Joyce with an erroneous Shackleton ancestor I had in my tree and decided not to follow that up.<\/li>\n<li>ThruLines were helpful in correcting errors in my tree in this case.<\/li>\n<li>There may still be a connection between Marilyn and Joyce on the Shackleton Line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been looking recently at Ancestry&#8217;s Thru-Lines.
